The Morning After: Apple's Mac and Google's Pixel events, previewed
Apple's second fall product event kicks off later today at 1 PM ET. We've laid out what to expect, but it's not the only big tech event week. Spare a thought for some of our staff, who will go straight from Apple reportage into Google. Yep, Tuesday October 19th is Google's Pixel 6 event. While we know what the phone will look like -- and some of its specifications -- expect to see some software surprises.

Spacewalking astronauts finishing months of robot arm repair
Spacewalking astronauts stepped out Friday to wrap up months of repair work on the International Space Station's big robot arm. NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei and Japan's Norishige Kanai emerged from the orbiting complex as the sun rose over Peru's western coast, 250 miles below. The 58-foot robot arm had both of its aging mechanical hands replaced on spacewalks conducted in October and January. Friday's work involved bringing one of those old hands inside so it can be returned to Earth for a tuneup and then flown back up, and moving the other gripper to a long-term storage location outside. This last spacewalk in the series should have been completed by now, but was postponed because of complications with the robotic hand that was installed last month. Further delays were caused by this week's late arrival of a Russian supply ship.

Six-hour chore: NASA pair replace hand on space station's robotic arm
CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – Spacewalking astronauts gave a hand to the International Space Station's big robot arm Tuesday. As the federal government geared back up 250 miles below, NASA astronauts Mark Vande Hei and Scott Tingle successfully installed the new mechanical gripper. Because of the lingering effects of the government shutdown, the spacewalk got started in the morning without coverage on NASA TV. An on-air message simply stated: "We regret the inconvenience." Nearly an hour into the spacewalk, however, NASA TV came alive and began broadcasting the event with typical blow-by-blow commentary.

Astronaut Mark Vande Hei made fast work of greasing the big robot arm's new hand. Vande Hei and station commander Randy Bresnik replaced the latching mechanism on one end of the 58-foot robot arm last Thursday. "I finish six months on the space station," Vande Hei replied. As the space station approached Italy early in the spacewalk, Mission Control urged Bresnik and Vande Hei to take some photos for their crewmate, Paolo Nespoli.

Vande Hei and station commander Randy Bresnik replaced the latching mechanism on one end of the 58-foot robot arm last Thursday. Tuesday's work involved using a grease gun, which resembles a caulking gun, to keep the latching mechanism working smoothly. Vande Hei got a jump ahead in some greasing chores, but the two-part job still will spill into next week, in a third and final spacewalk. "Why don't we wash, rinse, repeat. Do it again in a week," Bresnik said as the 6 ½-hour spacewalk came to a close.

Astronauts go spacewalking to grease robot arm's new hand
NASA astronauts took another spacewalk outside the International Space Station on Tuesday, this time to grease the robot arm's new hand. The pair replaced the latching mechanism on one end of the 58-foot robot arm last Thursday. Tuesday's work involved using a grease gun, which resembles a caulking gun, to keep the latching mechanism working smoothly. The two-part lube job is expected to spill into next week, in a third spacewalk. These latches, or hands, are located on each end of the Canadian-built robot arm.

NASA spacewalkers install new hand on station's robot arm
Spacewalking astronauts worked at giving the International Space Station's big robot arm a new hand Thursday. Commander Randy Bresnik and Mark Vande Hei tackled the job on the first of three NASA spacewalks planned over the next two weeks. It needs to be replaced before an Orbital ATK supply ship launches in November. Spacewalking astronauts worked at giving the International Space Station's big robot arm a new hand Thursday. The Deep Space Gateway will orbit Earth and the moon and will open up opportunities for future exploration of deep space, as well as a return to the moon and missions to Mars.

First of three spacewalks will repair International Space Station's robotic arm
Crew embark on the first of a trio of October spacewalks to perform maintenance on the International Space Station. MIAMI – As every homeowner on earth knows all too well, every now and then you have to make repairs. There are three scheduled spacewalks that are all about International Space Station maintenance. On Thursday, two American astronauts, Commander Randy Breznik and Flight Engineer Mark Vande Hei, exited the air-lock, climbing out into microgravity as the Space Station passed above the eastern Mediterranean Sea. In this frame from NASA TV, Astronauts Mark Vande Hei, left, and Randy Bresnik work on the International Space Station on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017.

Spacewalkers install new hand on ISS robotic arm, will give it a lube job next time outside
CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – Spacewalking astronauts gave the International Space Station's big robot arm a new hand Thursday. Commander Randy Bresnik and Mark Vande Hei accomplished the job on the first of three NASA spacewalks planned over the next two weeks. "One down, two to go," Bresnik said as the seven-hour spacewalk came to a close. The pair will go back out Tuesday to lubricate the new arm attachment. It needed to be replaced before the arrival of an Orbital ATK supply ship in November.
